Blindness was a terrible affliction.
Shun Bei Fong conveyed enough of that sentiment through wailing and sobbing after the midwife had informed.
"She's my baby
… S-Surely something can be done… something
The shake of the waterbender's head spelt doom for Lao Bei Fong and his wife for the years to come.
Lao Bei Fong knew that and only wanted the best for his daughter, despite her limitations.
To help her and teach her, the Bei Fongs had insisted on a strict schedule for their daughter that had her engaged in activity at every hour.
"…rise and shine after daybreak, bath at 9, a light breakfast at 10, a calm stroll through the gardens at 11, light exercises with Master Yu at 11—please, feel free to stop the boredom at anytime, Sokka…" Toph added drily.
Sokka turned away from the blanket of stars of yet another sleepless night to his traveling companion. "So… what does this have to do you being unable to sleep?"
"Sleeptime was generally around 7—and sometimes even earlier when my parents had guests—and I'd be able to tell exact time by asking the maid. Here, even you
can't tell me the time… and it's all mixed up in my head, since we've been on the move so much."
Sokka bit his lip in thought and then shrugged back into his sack. "It's past midnight, that's for sure."
Toph wrinkled her nose in response. "Yeah, but what time will it be when I wake up? What if I wake up two days from now? What if we're caught by Fire Nation grouches sometime in between?"
Sokka heaved a sigh and pulled out his boomerang. "Happy?"
"About what? Dying? Not particularly," she replied, oblivious to his waving weapon. "Although a break from Snoreface over there would be nice." She jerked her head in the general direction of the sleeping Earth King.
"No, no," Sokka plunged one point of his boomerang in the nearby soil, knowing that Toph would be able to sense it. "I'm going to keep this here. If anything happens, I'll be ready."
Toph let out a chuckle before she could stop herself.
"I don't see what's so funny, Toph?"
"You're the one who got yourself stuck in a hole by Foo Foo Cuddly-whatever. The baby moose-lion."
Sokka shot up in response, annoyed.
"I am completely capable of protecting all of you," he stately, emerging from his cocooned bed once more.
Toph laughed deeply. "I'd like to see you against the massive firebending army that's going to come after us…"
"Very funny," Sokka muttered as he got to his feet (his goal of falling asleep for the night essentially forgotten). "I'll have you know that I, as the lone warrior of the Southern Water Tribe, was responsibly for going against Zuko and his crew when landed in our village."
He chose to willfully omit the fact that this confrontation was ultimately decided between Aang and Zuko.
"What, did you challenge them to an Agni Kai, or something?" Toph asked, recalling from her multicultural education back home.
Sokka grinned. "You could say that. I certainly put those Fire Nation idiots in their place after schooling them with my warrior moves."
He attempted to execute a jump-kick and a hand-swipe at the same time, and, to the horror of a semi-drowsy Toph, landed on top of the earthbending master, sprawled over her small body.
Toph made to shove Sokka's back, readying to use the surrounding earth to thrust him off her stomach… only to realized that she contact naked
A groan greeted her once again.
"Any reason you're shirtless right now?"
"I always sleep without my shirt… unless we're near the poles."
"Oh." She felt the blood rush to her face. "Are you wearing pants by any chance?"
"That's good to know." It was
"Um, Sokka? Any chance you could get off me anytime soon?"
She finally managed to exhale. "Uh. Thanks. Good night."
She buried her head into her pillow before he could respond, hiding her blushing face.
See, blindness wasn't a big problem. Toph could deal with that.
The problem rested in the fact that everyone else could see
